Littlestone scheme
Following completion of the Folkestone to Rye Strategy Study Babtie Brown and Root and HR Wallingford have been engaged by the Environment Agency, working in partnership with Shepway District Council, to develop a detailed sea defence scheme for the Littlestone-on-Sea frontage, from Littlestone to Pirate Springs. This area is currently defended by the following defence types, all of which will be improved to provide a consistent and appropriate defence standard.
Presently, mass concrete seawalls protect the frontage from Littlestone-on-Sea to St Mary's Bay. These consist typically of a vertical or stepped front face, a horizontal apron (or pavement) and a rear wall. The wall at St. Mary's Bay is of very recent contruction and incorpaorates an extensive concrete stepped apron. The defences from Littlestone-on-Sea to St. Mary's Bay are also helped by periodic shingle renourishment, without which they would deteriorate more rapidly.
