Scheme Progress - 31 March 2004

Specialist marine contractor Van Oord ACZ commenced construction on 1 March 2004 and the work is expected to be complete by September 2004. The majority of the work is currently taking place at Hythe with the raising of the existing splash wall nearing completion and the construction of the first of the large rock structures is well underway.

The first consignment of rock, which emanates from Larvik in Norway, arrived on the beach on the evening of Monday 22 March. Deliveries have been continuous day and night at high tide with construction and placement of the groyne at low tide. It is hoped that this 120m long x 28m wide structure will be completed before the Easter Holiday.

Traffic and pedestrian management is now in place at Sandgate and work will shortly be starting on the construction of a new splash wall.
