Scheme Progress - 16 August 2004

This is likely to be the penultimate report on the Scheme as works begin to draw to a close.

All rock structures are now complete. The construction of the concrete walkway on the large rock structure continues with most of the slabs now complete and the wave wall now under construction. Given good weather, this should be complete within the next 2 weeks.

The final loads of beach were pumped ashore over the weekend and the dredger has now returned to Rotterdam. All that remains is to recover the material from the low water mark and to reshape the beach to the required profile.

Concrete placement to the rear of Castle Road and Riviera Road continues with about half of the slabs now complete. Up to 10 slabs are poured each day so progress here is very fast and the maintenance gangway should be open by the end of August.

The only other works remaining are to repair the concrete sea wall nosing on Marine Walk, construct and repair access steps onto the beach from Marine Walk and finally to resurface Marine Walk which has been badly damaged due to the heavy trafficking of plant and machinery. This last operation is scheduled to take place during the second week in September.

We are attempting to reuse as much of the old groyne timber as possible and the contractor is constructing a number of benches from the wood.
.
The scheduled opening date for the Scheme is 5 October.

Some photos of the works are attached.
