Scheme Progress - 16 April 2004

The first rock structure at Hythe is now complete and the improvements to the wave wall are continuing and should be completed within the next few weeks. The promenade will shortly be open again to the public.

Work has now commenced on the first of the rock structures in Folkestone and this will be completed by the next update. The first 250m of The Riviera rock revetment (see photographs) is complete and work on the remaining 160m will be starting in the last week of April. Following this the maintenance gangway will commence joining the eastern and western extents of the existing gangway.

On Sandgate Esplanade, work continues on preparing the foundations for the wave wall at two locations and the first two sections of wall were completed this week (see photograph). This part of the work is scheduled for completion early in July. The Folkestone 10 mile race went ahead as usual on Good Friday. Following meetings with the organisers, part of the route was changed and with careful attention to site safety, we managed to accommodate 500 runners through the construction site.

The good weather of recent days, coupled with the Easter break has meant an increase in volume of people wanting to use the beach. It has been very difficult to keep people away from the works despite signing and fencing access points. It has now become necessary to place fencing along the entire maintenance gangway at Folkestone.

Generally the work is progressing well with few delays for bad weather.
