Priority Action 3 - High Knocke to Dymchurch Redoubt

High Knocke (18/7) to Dymchurch Redoubt (18/13)

Present standard
Less than 1:10 years

Proposed standard
1:100 years

Summary
The seawalls throughout the Dymchurch frontage have been affected by falling beach levels over many years and now, in areas, require urgent attention. From St Mary's Bay to the northern end of the Dymchurch Wall the shingle is now only found as a narrow fillet at the toe of the walls and the low sand foreshore enables ever-larger waves to reach the seawall. The preferred approach is therefore to construct either new timber or rock groynes and renourish with either shingle or sand between High Knocke (18/7) and Dymchurch Redoubt (18/13). This would be supplemented by the construction of a rock revetment and apron to protect the toe wall from the Sycamore Gardens (18/11) to Dymchurch Redoubt (18/13). This will be undertaken in two phases:

  • Phase 1 Sycamore Gardens (18/11) to Dymchurch Redoubt (18/13) - Rock revetment
  • Phase II High Knocke (18/7) to Dymchurch Redoubt (18/13) - Shingle/sand renourishment

The final selection as to which is preferred (sand or shingle beach nourishment) can not be made at the present strategic level. This will be decided at 'Scheme Appraisal' based on a balance of cost and amenity issues.

Estimated cost over the next fifty years (£)
Phase I £6,250,000
Phase II £15,400,000 - 24,500,000

Estimated benefit over the next fifty years (£)

Phase II £21,000,000 (excluding amenity benefits)
