Priority Action 5 - Romney Sands
Romney Sands (17/3)
Present standard
Less than 1:10 years
Proposed standard
1:100 years
Summary
Shingle nourishment to raise
the crest level to 7mOD would substantially improve the flood
defence standard and raise it to the indicative standard given
by MAFF. This would also allow the car park to be used on
a more regular basis (at present flood water tends to collect
in the natural depression in the car park).
To implement this option a Beach
Management Plan should be developed that contains detailed
local modelling of this frontage to ascertain the efficiency
of the existing groynes and to confirm the renourishment volumes
and recycling requirements. In the short-term (< 3 years)
the option would use recycled shingle from Dungeness. In the
medium to longer term the continuation of this practice will
hinge on the outcome of an 'appropriate assessment' of the
impact of recycling on the internationally important natural
environment within the Dungeness candidate Special Area of
Conservation designated under the European Habitats Directive.
If considered detrimental to the integrity of the Dungeness
site, or it prevents improvement, then marine won shingle
may be appropriate subject to financial or other environmental
constraints.
