Priority Action 7 - Coronation Parade,
East Pier to Copt Point
Coronation Parade, East Pier to
Copt Point (20/16)
Summary
In addition to repairs necessary
to prevent further concrete abrasion, and deterioration of
the reinforcement, parts of the wall should be reconstructed.
Frequent fluctuation in low beach levels mean that structural
repairs alone will not ensure the long term viability of the
wall and wave borne debris will continue to abrade it. The
costs for this option have been estimated as an initial structural
repair and ongoing patch and repair costs.
In addition to the structural
improvement of the arches the sand beach will need to be monitored
and managed. It may be necessary to construct a rock revetment
to prevent outflanking at the eastern end of Coronation Parade
to ensure longevity of the defence. Consideration will also
need to be given to the effective management of the cliff
and slopes above.
Although at present there is
no urgency to undertake works with time the existing defences
will deteriorate and by 2003 their residual life is likely
to be less than 5 years.
