Main Strategy Report
Section 5: Physical processes

Introduction

Section 5 reviews the physical processes operating within the study area and at its boundaries. It is structured in five Parts:

Part I: Coastal forcing (wave and water level conditions)
Part I presents the wave and water level conditions along the study frontage

Part II: Littoral processes
Part II considers the longshore drift of shingle and sand. It quantifies these rates as well as presenting the cross-shore distribution of the longshore drift

Part III: Fluvial forcing
Part III considers the hydrological characteristics of the catchments of the River Rother and the Royal Military Canal

Part IV: Joint probability
Part IV presents the assumptions made with regard to the joint probability of both extreme wave and water conditions occurring simultaneously, as well as the correlation between extreme sea states and fluvial conditions

Part V: Climate change
Part V considers the potential changes to the climate in terms of increased storminess, wave direction changes and sea level rise
